Green Street Badges

Green Street Badges are highlighted on your profile when you have indicated below how many things you are doing in your workplace to be just that bit more sustainable.

The Badges are a nice 'badge of honour' as well as a simple way of letting others know the areas in which you are having some success. They may want to contact you to see how you've gone about it.

If you do seven or more of these you will earn an Education Badge

  • Staff participate regularly in education programs about sustainability
  • The workplace provides staff with access to online information and email groups to inform them about sustainability
  • Staff have household profiles on Green Street
  • Share information with staff on scientific knowledge about sustainability
  • Share information with suppliers and customers on scientific knowledge about sustainability
  • Share information with staff on what action to take to live more sustainably
  • Share information with suppliers and customers on what action to take to live more sustainably
  • Teach community groups about sustainability - or help set up groups to do that
  • Sponsor or support groups who are educating others about sustainable living and working
  • Set up websites or other online groups to support learning and action about sustainability

  • We restore worn out or unserviceable items so they can be used again
  • We give items away to charities or agencies which collect unwanted items which are useable
  • We contribute items to garage sales or other reuse sale events or markets
  • We hand on useable childrenís clothing and toy items to friends, family and neighbours
  • We purchase reuseable goods where available
  • We support staff in their activities to reuse goods

If you do four or more of these you will earn a Sustainable Sport and Social Badge

We support staff involved in workplace sporting and social activity to:
  • Use sportswear which is made of sustainable materials and is produced sustainably
  • Use sporting goods (eg. bats, balls, nets, racquets) which are produced sustainably
  • Use sporting fields which are maintained in a sustainable way with minimal use of water and no use of harmful fertilisers
  • Use car pooling or bus transport or public transport to travel to and from sporting and/or social activities
  • Use catering at social events which is sustainably produced
  • Use venues for social events which operate sustainably

If you do three or more of these you will earn a Speaking Up Badge

  • Voice constructive opinions when sustainability issues are raised in social or workplace situations
  • Raise sustainability issues or ask appropriate questions where they add value to specific events (eg. workplace design, travel, work decisions, purchasing decisions etc)
  • Participate in face-to-face meetings in the community or workplace to voice constructive views about taking sustainable action
  • Participate in on-line conversations in the community or workplace to voice constructive views about taking sustainable action
  • Workplace is a member of professional networks with a focus on sustainability

If you do two or more of these you will earn a Carbon Credit Badge

  • Pay carbon credit fee when flying
  • Pay carbon credit fees for other events and activities in which we participate (concerts, sporting events, travel etc)
  • Pay carbon credits to cover all day-to-day workplace emissions (energy/water/waste/transport) or produce enough renewable energy on site to cover all day-to-day workplace emissions

If you do four or more of these you will earn a Local Action Badge

  • Participate regularly in local community activity
  • Work with local businesses to develop more sustainable workplaces
  • Member of a Green Street Business Precinct
  • Participate in bulk-buying projects in the neighbourhood (solar panels, electric bikes, hot water systems etc)
  • Participate in swapping or selling clothes or furniture or other household goods in the neighbourhood
  • Support staff and customers to become more sustainable

If you do eight or more of these you will earn a Workplace Design Badge

  • Design maximizes the availability of cooling breezes
  • We use natural ventilation and lighting wherever possible
  • There is insulation to all walls and ceilings
  • Construction materials are made from renewable resources
  • The building uses renewable energy supplies
  • Paints, varnishes and finishes are produced with no or low volatile organic compounds and are not toxic
  • Overall space used is minimized
  • There is no air conditioning
  • If air conditioning is on windows and doors are closed
  • If air conditioning is used thermostats are set at 24-26 degrees in hot weather and 18-19degrees in cold weather
  • Gas or green energy is used for cooking and heating

If you do all three of these you will earn a Product Responsibility Badge

  • We sell products that meet environmentally friendly practices and principles
  • We sell products that meet fair trade and human rights guidelines
  • We inform and promote product responsibility guidelines to clients and suppliers

If you do five or more of these you will earn a Green Planning Badge

  • We have a sustainability policy which measures up against accepted world standards
  • Sustainability is a solid thread throughout our strategic and operational plans
  • Staff are trained in sustainability practices
  • Each work area has its own sustainability plan
  • We track progress against sustainability targets and include our stakeholders in that process
  • We engage with suppliers and other stakeholders to set, review and change sustainability plans
  • We have a sustainable procurement policy

If you do four or more of these you will earn a Recycle Badge

  • We recycle or re-use all materials that are surplus to needs
  • We dispose of our food scraps by composting or worm farming or digging into a vegetable patch or giving to others who are able to use it
  • We recycle goods such as mobile phones, computers, printer cartridges, electrical items and other purchased items
  • We recycle/reuse printing paper
  • We purchase remanufactured printer cartridges
  • We sell excess waste to others who want it, as part of our industrial ecology strategy

If you do two or more of these you will earn a Planting Badge

  • We plant at least 10 trees or shrubs per month or organize others to do so on our behalf
  • Our workplace sponsors staff to work for volunteer organizations responsible for tree planting, seed gathering, native plant propagation or regeneration of natural resources
  • We donate to or are members of at least two organizations advocating for improving our forests and natural habitats

If you do all three of these you will earn a Fair Trade Badge

  • We buy goods from sources where workers are paid a reasonable wage
  • We buy goods from sources where human rights are observed
  • We buy goods from environmentally friendly workplaces

If you do five or more of these you will earn a Responsibe Purchasing Badge

  • Buy goods with low packaging whenever possible
  • When low-packaged goods are not provided when appropriate we tell the shop manager or producer of the goods to minimize packaging on products in the future
  • We buy locally produced products whenever available
  • We purchase from local suppliers whenever possible
  • We buy fair trade products - those from ethical and environmentally friendly workplaces and production sources where workers are paid a fair wage
  • We buy only low energy electrical products
  • We buy only products that are able to break down easily into nature or are able to be recycled easily

If you do three or more of these you will earn a Transport Badge

  • Most of our staff walk, ride or catch a train/bus/tram to work 75% or more of the time
  • Our fleet vehicles are electric or low fuel or hybrid cars using 6 litres or less per 100km
  • We have very efficient plans for the transport of goods and services to our workplace
  • We use teleconferencing or skyping for the majority of meetings which would otherwise require driving or flying

If you do two or more of these you will earn an Advocacy Badge

  • Our workplace is active in the community by helping others to commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Staff are active in the workplace by helping others to commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Our workplace subscribes to three or more sustainability groups such as Greening Australia, World Wildlife Fund and others.

If you do two or more of these you will earn a Car Pooling Badge

  • Carpooling is promoted and organized in our workplace
  • Over half of our staff who travel by car do so in car pools
  • Carpooling is used when staff need to travel to events off-site

If you do one or more of these you will earn an Organic Badge

  • We use organically grown food when catering in our workplace
  • Staff uniforms are made from organically grown materials

If you do two or more of these you will earn a Vege-friendly Badge

  • We have a vege garden and/or fruit trees in our workplace
  • We use fresh food at all workplace functions
  • We have incentives for staff to eat fresh fruit and vegetables

If you do five or more of these you will earn an Energy Badge

  • The majority of our power is sourced from renewable energy
  • We invest in shares in a renewable energy company
  • We have a solar hotwater system
  • We have solar power panels or other renewable energy sources generating at least half of our workplace energy needs
  • We unplug most appliances at the wall overnight and when not in use over long periods
  • All light fittings are low energy use
  • We switch off computer monitors when they are not in use

If you do four or more of these then you will earn a Water Badge

  • We have rainwater tanks which provide at least half of our workplace water supply needs
  • We have half flush toilets
  • We recycle our grey water
  • Leaky taps and pipes are always fixed immediately
  • We use water efficiently when required cleaning is done

If your children do seven or more of these you will earn a Green Kids Badge

Children in our house -
  • Switch off game machines, computers and other electrical appliances at the wall
  • Turn off lights when not in use
  • Shower for four minutes or less
  • Recycle everything they can
  • Walk or cycle to school and friends places when it is safe to do so
  • Help grow vegetables and fruit at home or at school or in a community garden
  • Turn off taps when brushing their teeth
  • Turn off the taps when washing their hair
  • Eat healthy foods the great majority of the time

  • One or more household members are members of two or more sustainability groups such as Greening Australia, World Wildlife Fund and others

If you do one of these you will earn a Car Pooling Badge

  • One or more household members car pool to work
  • One or more family members carpool to sporting or social events the majority of the time

If you do one of these you will earn an Organic Badge

  • We eat more than 50% organic food in our household
  • We purchase the majority of our clothing made from organically grown materials

If you do two or more of these you will earn a Vege-friendly Badge

  • One or more household members are vegetarian
  • We grow up to 50% of the vegetables we eat
  • We eat meat-free food for 75% or more of our meals

If you do four or more of these you will earn an Energy Badge

  • The majority of our power is sourced from renewable energy
  • We invest in shares in a renewable energy company
  • We have a solar hotwater system
  • We have solar power panels generating at least 1kWh
  • We unplug most appliances at the wall overnight and when not in use over long periods
  • All light fittings are low energy
  • We switch off computer monitors when they are not in use

If you do five or more of these you will earn a Water Badge

  • We have a rainwater tank which holds 3000litres or more
  • We all have short showers of 4minutes or less
  • We have half flush toilets
